  • What does jnana mean?
"Jnana" (also spelled "gyana" or "jñāna" in transliteration) is a Sanskrit term that means "knowledge" or "wisdom." It comes from the root "jna," which means "to know." In Indian philosophy and spiritual traditions, particularly within Hinduism and yoga, jnana refers to a deep, intuitive understanding or self-realized knowledge, often contrasted with mere intellectual or theoretical knowledge.
In the context of spiritual practice, such as in Jnana Yoga (the path of knowledge), it signifies the pursuit of self-realization or enlightenment through discernment, inquiry, and the direct experience of one's true nature, often by understanding the distinction between the self (Atman) and the non-self (material world or illusion, known as Maya).
